Kirundo: an Imbonerakure killed by his peers

A 41-year-old man was killed on Thursday morning on Rwimbogo hill, in the Rushubije zone in Ntega commune (Kirundo province, northern Burundi). The victim, an Imbonerakure (member of the CNDD-FDD youth league, the presidential party), was reportedly violently beaten by his peers, over accusation of not keeping secretly the crimes of his group. Habayimana (41 years old) was arrested by a group of Imbonerakure on Wednesday night around 10 p.m.

The Imbonerakure, led by Nzobarinda, reportedly abused two people – a man and a woman – walking from a cabaret.

“Habayimana came to visit the leader of the Imbonerakure of Rwimbogo hill, named Nzobarinda with whom he was stealing at night,” say local sources.

He was asked where he was going at 10 p.m. and replied that he was going to Nzobarinda’s house.

According to our sources, Nzobarinda had a grudge against him tied with suspicion of secret revelation about night thefts perpetrated by the Imbonerakure and their leader.

Nzobarinda ordered the other Imbonerakure to “correct him”.

“Even if he loses his last breath. I’ll take care of the rest,” Nzobarinda said.

They have beaten the victim leaving him for dead in the same place.

“We don’t know how he managed to get home. Around 2 a.m. on Thursday, we took him to the health center being in very critical condition. He was vomiting and urinating blood. He gave up his soul around 5 a.m. at the health center,” said a family member.

His family is demanding justice.

“The perpetrators are known but until now justice has done nothing to get their hands on them.”

The perpetrators alleged that the victim was caught breaking into a house to steal from it.

A local human rights organization demands the immediate arrest of the criminals. It also asks the administrator of Ntega, Pierre Claver Mbanzabugabo to “break the silence because this commune is the scene of several murders”.

The municipal authority was not available to react to these allegations.
