South: dizzying rise in the price of transport tickets

The rise in the price of transport tickets is an unprecedented due to the fuel shortage.
For example, the transport ticket for Bururi- Rumonge ride is currently 20,000 Burundian francs while the official price is 10,000 francs. Travelers accuse the administrative and police authorities of turning a blind eye to speculation. INFO SOS Médias Burundi

The transport ticket on the trip Matana – Rutana provincial capital is currently 12,000 francs against the official cost of 6,000 francs.

The transport ticket is also up on the Bujumbura-Matana ride.

Passengers “deplore currently paying 25,000 instead of the 10,000 francs set by the government”.

Transporters say this is due to the fact that they buy fuel on the black market. A liter of gasoline or fuel oil is purchased for more than 30,000 francs (7 times more than the official price), but you still have to find some with as effect the price increase so not to work at a loss.

The south of the country has not been regularly supplied with fuel for days, local sources say.

Some pump attendants say that “even when they are supplied, they receive minimal quantities compared to demand”.

Passengers accuse administrative officials and police officers of turning a blind eye to this surge in transport ticket prices.

An administrative source admitted that “the provincial authorities do not have a miracle solution to prevent the rise in transport tickets in a context of fuel shortage.”
