Ituri: around thirty people killed in Djugu

A new deadly attack by CODECO (Cooperative for the Development of Congo) occurred in the territory of Djugu, chiefdom of Bahema-Banywagi in the village of Nyamamba this weekend. Local civil society indicates that attackers operated on the shores of Lake Albert where they killed 31 people, including 24 people in Nyamamba and 7 others in the village of Mbongi in the Lossandrema groupment in the chiefdom of Bahema-Nord. The local civil society says several other people remain missing since last Saturday’s attack.

Human rights defenders say they regret the fact that so far no military intervention has been planned.

SOS Médias Burundi tried to reach the spokesperson for military operations in Ituri without success.

The region is terrorized by local and foreign armed groups including CODECO and the ADF (Allied Democratic Forces). Since January 8, 2023, at least 66 civilians have been killed in the territories of Djugu and Irumu in Ituri, according to our count.

They died in attacks attributed to the two armed movements despite the signing of a unilateral ceasefire last December by the CODECO, in Nairobi (Kenya) during the third round of talks on the Congolese crisis.
