Giheta: a young pregnant girl murdered
Esther Irakoze (20 years old) was killed last Thursday on Rutegama hill Giheta commune, Gitega province, central Burundi. Three suspects were apprehended as part of a police investigation.

The victim’s body was discovered in a small bush on Rutegama hill, according to witnesses.
“We were alerted by residents before going to the scene. The victim’s body showed bruises and wounds on her genitals. She was certainly raped before being killed”, indicates Séverin Ndimurwanko, head of Rutegama hill.
Local sources claim that Esther Irakoze was pregnant.
“She refused to abort her child. The one who was suspected of having impregnated her, Joseph Hatungimana, had always refused to recognize this paternity,” say relatives of the victim.
Three suspects, including Joseph Hatungimana, were arrested. They are detained at the provincial police station in Gitega.
Among the detainees are two students including Hatungimana.
