Nduta (Tanzania): a Burundian refugee kidnapped

Elias Manirakiza, in his fifties, was kidnapped by people who have not yet been identified. The police reassure that they are looking for him. But his family despairs.

INFO SOS Médias Burundi

Élias Manirakiza lives in zone 9, village 2. He disappeared this Sunday at dawn, according to witnesses who are worried about his fate.

“An unusual vehicle came very early in the morning and parked in front of his home. The man was awakened and was ordered to go inside. He left on board without any further explanation to his family,” we learn.

His family searched for him in the region’s official custodies, to no avail. The family contacted the police.

The police went to his house on Sunday evening to make inquiries. But surprisingly, they informed Manirakiza’s family that “the car which took him away is not known to the police” and that therefore “the police are worried about his fate”.

“So imagine if the police are worried, what about us family and neighbors! It’s desolation, in fact! » Burundians around him say, surprised. They fear he could be killed and/or deported to Burundi.

A clue is revealed.

“He is reportedly being questioned by the Tanzanian intelligence services on the case of his son-in-law who joined the ranks of the rebels in the DRC last month,” indicate sources close to the matter.

“But he is innocent, how can he know the information about his son-in-law? First, he is old and then his daughter’s husband cannot talk to him about his entire program, much less his ambitions and secrets,” our sources say.

The daughter of this fifty-year-old (wife of the man who allegedly left for rebel movements) worries that she could suffer the same fate as her father.

The family of Elias Manirakiza dissociates himself from any act committed by an adult member, and asks that they not be persecuted as is customary for simple cases of suspicion to the point of forcing them to register for a “voluntary” return.

The Nduta camp has more than 64 thousand Burundian refugees. The refugees mostly fled the 2015 crisis that was triggered by another controversial mandate of the late President Pierre Nkurunziza.
