On Saturday, the lifeless body of a young man in his thirties was discovered in the New Katuza area.

“He was apparently slit. He had no traces of blood or injuries,” sources at the Dzaleka camp said.

This young Burundian was “a popular drummer in the camp,” we learned. His mother told the police that her son responded to a call from a stranger who introduced himself as an acquaintance, then went to meet him and never returned.

His family, who lives in the Kawale I area, are demanding investigations to determine the causes and perpetrators of this crime.

And on Sunday, the next day, a sixty-year-old from the Likuni I area was found dead, not far from the camp. According to local sources, this farmer had gone to his tomato fields where his body was discovered the evening of the same day.

Medical services confirmed on Monday that the two men had their throats cut.

Refugees believe that their safety is seriously threatened. They are asking the police to be extra vigilant.

On Monday, the administration and the police called an emergency meeting to calm the situation. Refugees are asked to report any unusual facts and gestures to the camp.

Even if the motives for this crime are not yet known, the administration is focusing on the idea of ​​settling scores. The police said they had started investigations to identify perpetrators of these crimes.

Local leaders say overcrowding in Dzaleka camp can also lead to a rise in crime.

Designed to accommodate 10,000 people, Dzaleka currently shelters more than 50,000 refugees.
