Uvira: a physician killed by armed men

The attack in which the doctor perished targeted three men who were leaving Uvira for Bijombo in the province of South Kivu in eastern Congo. They include the late physician, the administrator of the Nyakirango hospital and the logistics officer at the same health facility.
“Gunmen came out of nowhere and shot the three men. Dr. Mudandaza died on the spot”, say local sources.
The perpetrators of the attack are assimilated to the Maï-Maï René militiamen, according to residents.
The two other employees of the Nyakirango hospital were injured in the arm and head. They were transferred to the general hospital in Uvira.
A spokesman for the FARDC (Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo) confirmed that rebels from the Maï-Maï René armed group carried out the attack.
A Maï-Maï René spokesperson was not available to comment on the allegations.
Last Friday evening, two other civilians were killed by a Congolese soldier in the town of Uvira, confirmed military sources and witnesses. He is held in a local military intelligence cell.
