Bujumbura: Fifteen CNL activists detained after dispute with Imbonerakure

At least 15 members of the main CNL opposition party were arrested on Sunday and Monday after a clash with Imbonerakure (members of the CNDD-FDD youth league). The CNL activists had held a meeting on their hill to discuss the state of their party last Sunday around 4 p.m., when Imbonerakure came to prevent the meeting from taking place.

“Imbonerakure came, they wanted to ban the meeting, saying it was illegal. A fight broke out between the two groups,” says a resident of Kibuye hill, who witnessed the scene.

According to the same source, about fifteen CNL activists were arrested after the incident. Eight were apprehended on Sunday, seven others were arrested the next day.

Families of the arrested activists say they do not know the place of their detention. But there are reports that some of them are held by the National Intelligence Service.

Their relatives request their release and unconditionally.

In a press briefing on Monday, CNL leader Agathon Rwasa denounced the political intolerance that is observed in Burundi.
