Nakivale (Uganda) : WFP updates its data

It is a routine activity. The UN agency, after a given period, proceeds to a verification of still active refugees for the so-called adequate assistance. INFO SOS Médias Burundi

According to the World Food Program, the activity is organized within the framework of updating the data of refugees still present in the camp.

Before the Covid-19 pandemic, the data were updated every two months, but given the unsuitable situation, refugees are now counted once every six months, or even more.

Updating the data allows the World Food Organization to do better planning, officials say.

Since 2017, there has been increased displacement among refugees living in Nakivale. Some go to Kampala, the Ugandan capital to stay there, others go to neighboring Kenya or are repatriated to Burundi.

“So it’s difficult to know the exact number of aid beneficiaries if we don’t do this kind of verification”, explain the WFP staff.

The exercise which started last week in the village of Kahirimbi-Juru is for a duration of more than 16 days in the whole camp. The total number of refugees to be verified in the Nakivale camp is around 140,000 people of several nationalities.
The operation takes place in usual distribution places of the monthly ration and the concerned people respond massively to their interest.

This camp still hosts more than 33,000 Burundian refugees.
